From the Desk of the Lay Director – Sep 2018

“Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”  Isaiah 40:31.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”  Romans 15:13.

I paint ceramics on most Fridays.  We get to meet and visit with friends and paint.  But how many pieces of ceramics can you dust in your house?  The owner of the shop came up with a standalone cross with cut out words.  I love doing crosses with “Hope” on them.  I started doing “Joy” crosses.  They are simple to paint. No elaborate or very detailed pieces. One color or two.  I can paint and talk at the same time.  But the beauty of these crosses, I have given every one of them away.  I do not paint any of them with someone (except one) in mind.  But as I finish one, I run into someone who needs a boost, a smile, or a listening ear.

I do not think that I will solve the problem of world peace.  I do not think I will find a cure for cancer.

Probably, most of us will not.  But we can make the world a better place.  I was cleaning out a box and came across some leftover agape pieces.  The one I liked the best “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”  A penny was attached to the card.

Do what you can to make the world a better place and the people you meet happier.  As a pastor friend of mind said:  “The Jesus in me loves the Jesus in you.”

Share the gift of your Emmaus experience with others, enabling God’s gift of grace to be passed on.  The fact that the Emmaus experience passes from person to person reflects the relational nature of God and the manner in which God purposefully reaches out to people through people.

If you are not in a reunion or an accountability group, please consider joining one or starting one.  Find one that best suits you.

From the Desk of the Lay Director – Aug 2018

I got to go home again.  I spent last weekend down in Southeast Texas (Beaumont) where I grew up.  The yards and houses of my childhood were so big then.  Boy, have they shrunk now.  It was miles to the railroad tracks where we played.  Funny, now it is only two blocks.  Our back yards did not have any fences.  We got to play from one house to another without going through gates and locks. But, the humidity!!!!!  I thought I remembered it but that it was not so bad. Oh No, It knocked me for a loop.  I guess I am a West Texan now!

I spent time playing several games of Skip Bo and Yahtzee and, of course, Go Fish with three little girls. We played with the puppies (Does anyone want a Great Dane? They are small now. And cute.)  Weeded the flower garden.  Read books. We had a puzzle to put together but we ran out of time. Went swimming next door. Of course, I just had the garden hose to get wet with when I was young, but it was fun.  Ate meals at home.  Made crafts. Worked on an aircraft carrier model with about 500 pieces.  Will like to see that when it gets finished.  Did get to go to the movies.  Generally, just enjoyed the weekend with family.  Did not have the I-pads, video games or DVDs.

I guess you noticed that I did not include going to church.  My sister and her family are not church-goers.  I know they believe in God, but he is not a priority.  There are too many things to get done: house, work, and yard.  We went to church in our childhood.  It was there but not a priority.  I remember walking to church on Sundays when my family did not go.  But I also remember times when we did go as a family.  Mom and dad being on church committees, Sunday school teachers, having fellowship with other church members.  Somewhere God got put up on a shelf until needed.

Emmaus helps us to keep on track, to help us get our priorities in order, to know God on a very personal basis.  We need to surround ourselves with Christians to pick us up when needed, to hold us accountable for our actions, but, most of all, to love us and to want only the best for us.

“The Lord will give grace and glory; no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.”  Psalm 84:11

“Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart”.  Psalm 27:14

If you are not in a reunion group, study group or any accountability group, please gather two or three and start one.  You can never have too many people on your side.

From the Desk of the Lay Director – July 2018

We got rain. It was a nice, gentle rain. I was all prepared to work on projects while listening to the rain. There is something soothing about rain drops (no hail, please). Unfortunately, our lights went out. This time I remembered where I stashed the flashlight and the lantern. So, now to plan B.

I went to the door and noticed the lightening show. The lightning strikes were horizontal. I sat down and spent the hour quietly thinking, praying and watching the show. I think I needed that more that accomplishing my projects. I had a wonderful time. Quiet and restful. The lights came on, and, guess what, my projects were still there and the world did not end because I did not devote the whole evening to them. We do need to “stop and smell the roses.” There are so many things we miss out on. But, please remember to keep praying for rain, and the farmer’s prayer: “Three inches, gentle, over an eight hour period.” But I am sure they welcome what they get.

I hope to see you at Community. It is so nice to talk with different folks. Make a point to sit with someone you do not know. And you can make a new friend.

Please go to the website and check out your data. This is the information we have to select future team members. If the data is incorrect, we cannot connect with you. If you have not been asked to serve on a team in a while, and would like to, please e-mail Judy Butcher (jaybeetwo@juno.com) for women’s teams and Frank McClelland (fandjmcl@poka.com) for men’s teams. You must wait a year from the last walk you worked to work another walk. The team selection committee prays over the list of eligible persons and comes up with a possible team list for the Walk. There are several names submitted for each team position. The Lay Director will then use this list to contact possible team members for his/her Walk. Working a walk is such a blessing. If you are called, please consider it prayerfully.

September 28-30 Kairos Outside #16
October 25-28 Women’s Walk #147

And then there starts 2019. There are still plenty of opportunities for sponsorships and providing agape.

Please pray about sponsoring a pilgrim. Blessings come to the pilgrim but the sponsors gets so much more. On the Kairos Outside, the agape is given only to the guests; you need to make only 36.

From the Desk of the Lay Director – June 2018

It is hard to believe that it is still not summer.  I do not think I want to live on the equator. But today, the wind was still blowing but it was cooler.  It was nice to be outside, but knowing if I got too hot I could go inside with the air conditioner.  I am spoiled.  Air conditioning we take for granted, until we do not have it.  It is hard to remember the days when I was in grade school, all we had was the attic fan.  We slept with the windows open.  Remember Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds”.  I slept under my bed and, to this day, when there is a large gathering of birds, I still get nervous.  But, yes, I watch it again when it comes on.  Memories are so unique.  The smell of the skunk.  Most people do not like it.  I remember going to my grandparents.  We always arrived after midnight.  They lived in the country and, there was the smell of a skunk when we got within five miles.  To this day, when I smell a skunk, I look up to see if I am near my grandparent’s house. Life is about the wonderful memories we have.  We can remember them as good or we can remember them as half empty.

We have the opportunity to create new memories with our families, our friends or the people we pass on the street.  Not all of us will have the opportunity to create world peace, find the cure for cancer or eliminate the calories in chocolate, but we do have the opportunity to make “disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”

Poppy Beard, (you know how awesome she is.  If you do not know her, make it a point to do so.  So much love and energy for the Lord) has ten women from her ministry who would love to have a stronger relationship with the Lord and would like to attend Women’s Walk #145.  There is room on the walk for them.  I know the team will be blessed by their presence.  Unfortunately, they only have funds for one-half of the cost of the walk.  Could you please pray to consider financially sponsoring one of these women.  Poppy will have the other areas of sponsorship covered.  If you cannot pay one half ($87.50), please give what you can.  “This poor widow put in two very small copper coins.”  Luke 21:1-4.

You may mail me a check, payable to Emmaus (8605 North County Road 3900, Lorenzo, TX 79343) or put your contribution in an envelope and write on the front of the envelope Women’s Walk #145 at Community on June 7.  Blessings to you!

They say there are only two things in life that are a given: death and taxes. I think there is a third: CHANGE. No one can go through life without change. Some good (thank God for the blessings) and some not so good (Thank God for walking with you during these times.)

I watched the pilgrims’ faces during send off. They waited with apprehension for their name to be called. They trusted their sponsors, but, there still was some uneasiness about the unknown.

When I first started coming to candlelight several years ago, I sat in the back of the church. I got to see the pilgrims’ faces when they first came through the door. Shock, wonderment?

Now, I sit at the front of the church. I do not see the first reaction, but I get a close view of the astonishment on their faces when they are climbing the risers and realize that these people are here for them. Their faces are glowing.

At closing, I get to sit next to them and watch their faces and listen to their testimonies. They are not the same people they were on Thursday night.

They formed a family during the weekend. Staying connected is the key. Please welcome the pilgrims of Men’s Walk #101 into your reunion group or start a reunion group with them. “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” – Matthew 18:20

The Chrysalis Community is hosting a fund Raiser on Saturday, May 5 at St Joseph’s Hall (21st and Division, one block west of Mercy Center) from 6 – 7:30 PM. Fajita dinner with all the trimmings. Then stay for candlelight at St Joseph’s Catholic Church at 8:00PM. If you have not been to a Chrysalis candlelight, you will enjoy it. Registration fees for all Chrysalis’ journeys are funded by fund raisers such as this. Please come and support the Chrysalis Community. They are asking for a $10.00 minimum donation.
