From the Desk of the Lay Director – Aug 2020

Hello Emmaus Community!!

I pray everyone is staying healthy and blessed.  We are doing great and we are blessed for sure.  It is great that the temperature has dropped to double digits and cooling down in the evenings.  What a great community meeting we had in July! The music and fellowship were wonderful.

The scripture I would like to share is Philippians 4:6-8, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God:  and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding will guard you hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.    Finally  brethren , whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praise worthy-meditate on these things.”  If you watch the news, there is only fear and panic.  Put all your trust is Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.

It is unfortunate, but it was decided by the board that Women’s Walk 154, August 6-9 had to be cancelled due to concerns over Covid-19.   It was with great sadness.  The team for this walk has been moved to August of 2021.  Please pray with us that the walks on our schedule for the rest of this year will take place as scheduled.

A few weeks ago a friend of ours in New Mexico was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer and sent home under hospice care.  She was not a believer. Bonnie and I discussed and prayed over the situation and decided to make a quick trip to our cabin, praying for one last chance to talk with her about Christ.  We requested prayer from many friends and headed to New Mexico.  God prepared the way and Bonnie was able to lead her in prayer. It was a beautiful example of God’s Prevenient Grace.  After the prayer, she drifted off to sleep and passed 4 days later.  When God gives you an opportunity to be a witness to someone, don’t pass it up, even if it is inconvenient and a 12 hour drive round trip.

Our next Community meeting will be August 6th at Canyon United Methodist Church, 217 Farm to Market Road 1729.  The Board meeting will be at 5:45 with the Community meeting at 7pm.  There will not be a meal.  I hope to see you there.  May God richly bless each one of you and keep you in His almighty hand.

Hey Emmaus Community!

The scripture I have for you this month is Psalms 62: 5-8. My soul, wait silently for God alone, for my expectation is from Him. He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be moved. In God is my salvation and my glory; the rock of my strength, And my refuge, is in God. Trust in him at all times, you people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us.

I hope everyone is well and Covid-19 is staying away from your door. We are staying healthy, through the grace of God. Let us continue to cover our community in prayer.

Do you remember the movie, Bill and Ted’s excellent adventure? Well, we went on an adventure and called it Blue and Digit’s Excellent Adventure. Some elderly friends of ours weren’t doing and had to move to where their kids were in Billerica, MA, just north of Boston. They could not determine a way to get their car or their dog Digit there. So, we volunteered to drive their little blue car and take Digit. We left Lubbock on Friday June 12th and in a roundabout way seeing family and friends on the way we made it to Billerica and flew back on Saturday June 20th. It was a long trip, but we got to see lots of God’s creation on the way. We took a side trip to Lancaster, PA to see the Amish country and Hershey, Pa. We brought back lots of Hershey chocolate. There were no problems or complications and we give God praise for a safe trip. The only struggle was the car we drove was a small Chevrolet Spark with no cruise control and hand crank windows. But it did have air conditioning and an automatic transmission. God blessed us with an enjoyable and safe trip.

If you missed the Community Meeting on June 4th, you missed a great meeting. The weather was good, not too hot with a slight breeze. God showed up and even though it was outside it was great. Some stayed in their cars while others brought chairs.

The next community meeting will be July 9th. We will be meeting at Oakwood United Methodist Church, 2215 58th Street. We will be practicing social distancing. It is not a requirement to wear a mask but we request that you please wear one, especially if you have a cough or sneeze due to allergies which I have been struggling with since March. The board meeting will be at 5:45 with the community meeting at 7pm and we will NOT be sharing a meal. After the meeting we could use your help in spraying the door handles, toilet stalls and any place we might have touched with Lysol. If anyone would like to form a committee to see that this is done so we are organized and not re-cleaning the same area, please let me know and I will notify the community to work with you. Your help will be greatly appreciated. I hope to see you there.

I will be working this month to get the website up to date. I apologize; it should have already been done. Our next walks are as follows:

  • Women’s Walk August 6-9, 2020
  • Men’s Walk September 17-20
  • Women’s Walk October 22-25
  • Kairos Outside September 25-27
  • Kairos November 5-8

We trust the Lord that these will not have to be changed. However, we will have to still practice social distancing and following new guidelines which may change from time to time. But we want to keep the true meaning and keep God first in everything we do. Please start praying for these walks and for wisdom for the leaders as they continue to put these walks together.

May God richly bless each one of you in a special way and keep you safe.

Hey you all!

I am so glad this corona thing is subsiding. Praying it goes away completely. Praying all of you are well and safe.

The scripture I want to share this month is Psalms 18:1-3.

“I will love You, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom will I trust; My shield and the horn (strength) of my salvation, my stronghold. I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised; so shall I be saved from my enemies”.

I just posted on the Llano Emmaus website the information for our Community Meeting Thursday night. It will be a great time of worship together. Hope all of you can make it. Looking forward to seeing your smiling faces.

May God richly bless each one of you!! See you Thursday.

Hello everyone,

We have made it through a month since my last newsletter. I pray everyone is healthy and the Coronavirus has not come near your dwelling.  Unfortunately we will not be able to meet again on May 7th.  I was so looking forward to hosting the Community Meetings. The Upper Room says Emmaus activities are suspended until at least May 11th. I am looking forward to seeing all of you again on June 4th.  I have missed seeing you.

Bonnie and I decided that since we are isolated here, we would sneak off to our cabin in Timberon, NM and isolate there for two weeks.  New Mexico requires you to quarantine for 14 days.  When we crossed the state line, we got an amber alert signal on our cell phones that said “Covid 19, Stay at home orders in place”.  Bonnie said “They are tracking us” We did not go in any stores coming or going, but stopped to get gas only.  It was a great time and got a lot of projects completed at the cabin.  And you know, God was there with us with His peace and protection.  But alas, we had to come back to check the mail and pay bills.

We will find out soon what the Governor and Mayor say we are allowed to do.  Hopefully, we can start meeting and getting back to work.  Of course I say that but since I am retired…..  Hopefully, Bonnie can start working again soon.

In the last newsletter, I stated that the board was working on allowing babe chicks that have just completed a walk will be allowed to work a walk within the first year.  As previously stated, you will be allowed to work on the outside team.  However, after discussing this with the Upper Room and their recommendations, you will not be allowed to work on the inside team until after you have waited one year.  This will be discussed and settled at the next board meeting.

As time progresses we will be notifying you as to the future of scheduled walks and rescheduling walks that have been cancelled.  Hopefully and prayerfully we can get back to normalcy very soon.

I will leave you with Psalms 138, Verses 7-8:  “Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You will revive me.  You will stretch out Your hand against the wrath of my enemies, and Your right hand will save me.  The Lord will perfect (accomplish, complete) that which concerns me, Your mercy, O Lord, endures forever, Do not forsake the works of your hands.”  May God richly bless each one of you in a special way.

Hello everyone.  I would like to share with you my favorite verse.  It is Isaiah 41:10; “Fear not for I am with you, be not dismayed for I am your God.  I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”   Put your trust in him during this time of struggle.

Well, April 1st is here, April fool’s day and no fooling I am excited to announce that I am your new Community Lay Director.  I look forward to serving the community.  My theme for the coming year is “Get excited about Llano Emmaus.  I believe God wants to restore the Llano Emmaus Community to what it once was.  Do you remember when you completed your first walk, how excited and joyous you were?  Well, you need to get back in The Emmaus Community and get involved. You need to send your family members and friends on a Walk to Emmaus, Chrysalis, or Kairos Outside or get involved in Kairos or Epiphany and to attend Send Off, Candlelight, and listen to their testimonies on Sunday afternoon.  I would like to see the Church filled to capacity at these events and at our monthly community meetings.   I would like to see a waiting list to be able to go on one of these walks.  It is time to get back involved.

The Upper Room sent us a notification that we are to cancel all group activities for 8 weeks from March 16 until May 11th.  Hopefully this will all be over by then and we will be working towards some normalcy.  Therefore, we have cancelled the community meetings for April and May.  The Llano Estacado Emmaus board will be discussing the postponement of the walks that fall into this time frame at our board meeting that will be handled by conference call.  I pray that everyone stays healthy and in good spirits during this time.

If you have just completed your first walk, you now can work on the outside team within the first year and the board is discussing allowing you to work as an Assistant Table Leader on the inside team.  So if you receive a call to work, please do not hesitate, but get involved.  If you have already worked a walk, please respect the others opportunity to work. Once you have worked a walk you MUST wait a year before you can work another one.

If anything changes or we get a new directive, I will let you know.  May God richly bless each one of you in a special way.
